Directory Submission Tips
Some site owners make the mistake of thinking that a web directory is the same thing as a search engine. A search engine spiders and then indexes sites on the world wide web. When users submit a query to the search engine the most relevant sites are returned based on a complex algorithm. A directory does not depend on a robot to gather the information on web sites but rather on people to input the information into a database. Most directories rely on the input from other users and webmasters to obtain their listings and generally will not list your website unless it is submitted specifically for that purpose. Getting your site listed in a directory follows a completely different set of rules than those that are used to get your site listed in a search engine.
Here are some tips to make sure that your site is accepted and listed in the directory you are submitting to. First make sure your site is complete. Do not start seeking directory submission until the site is ready for prime time, no broken links or broken images. Next ensure that you are submitting to the correct category. Take a minute to browse the directory and decide which category would be most appropriate. Create a short and descriptive title that describes exactly what the site is about without using too many words, that is what the description is for. In the description provide an objective and concise paragraph covering what the site is about without using sales words like "the best" and "world's greatest". By providing the appropriate information in your submission you will save the directory owner the trouble of having to edit your submission and thus greatly increasing your chances of acceptance.
